Divorce Education for Children Pilot
Program
There are numerous children who are affected by their parents
divorce each year. In 2008, 13,728 divorce cases were filed in
Utah; 10,841 children were involved in these cases.
Since March 2008, classes for the Divorce Education for Children
Pilot Program have been held regularly at the Scott M. Matheson
Courthouse in downtown Salt Lake City.
The class was developed under the premise that children need
information about the divorce process. The classes are held
twice each month on a Monday night and Saturday morning. A
mental health professional teaches the two-hour class with the
assistance of a state court judge or commissioner. The class
helps children to identify feelings common in divorce
situations, while teaching communication skills to empower
children to express their feelings. The class provides an
overview of the divorce process and emphasizes that divorce is
not the child’s fault. Children also have an opportunity to
wear a judge’s robe and have their picture taken “on the
bench”.
T he parents of children attending the class have reported a
positive change in their child’ s behavior after taking the
class. Many parents report that their child shows less sadness
and anger and can communicate more openly about his/her
feelings.
Not only have parents reported that the class was beneficial to
their child, but felt the class |

should continue to be offered for the benefit of other children
whose parents are divorcing. The children who have participated
in the class have expressed that afterwards they feel better
able to talk to their parents about the divorce. Children have
also learned that divorce isn’t their fault and that their
parents still love them.
The class is free of charge and open to all 9 to 12 year old
children whose parents are divorced or divorcing. Classes are
held one Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. and one Saturday from 10 a.m.
to 12 p.m. each month. Upcoming classes are scheduled as
follows:
Monday, June 8
Saturday, June 27
