In 1921 …

• Congress passes Budget and Accounting Act, which creates the Bureau of Budget (June 10).

• U.S. Congress, in a joint resolution, declares WWI ended (July 2).

• First burial is held at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery (Nov. 11).

• Vitamin D is discovered and shown to prevent rickets.

• Vitamin E is discovered.

 

In 1922 …

• Lincoln Memorial is dedicated in Washington, D.C. (May 30).

• Coalminers strike for nearly six months to protest wage cuts. The strike, one of several organized by the United Mine Workers of America since 1919, cripples the coal mining industry

• British Egyptologists George Carnarvon and Howard Carter unearth King Tutankhamen's tomb in the Valley of the Kings, the only tomb that remained unlooted through the centuries.

• Insulin, which regulates the use of sugar, is isolated and used for the treatment of diabetes by Frederick Banting and Herbert Best.

 

On November 18th

   1820 - Captain Nathaniel Palmer discovered Antarctica.

   1883 - Standard time began in the United States.

   1886 - Chester A. Arthur, 21st president of the United States (1881–85), died in New York at 56.

   1928 - Mickey Mouse made his debut in Steamboat Willie.

   1976 - Spain's parliament approved a bill to establish a democracy after 37 years of dictatorship.

   1978 - Jim Jones, a U.S. pastor, led 914 of his followers to their deaths at Jonestown, Guyana, by drinking a cyanide-laced fruit drink. Cult members who refused to swallow the drink were shot.

   2003 - The Massachusetts Supreme Court ruled 4-3 that the right to same sex marriage was guaranteed by the state constitution.

   2004 - The UN Security Council held a two-day session in Nairobi. This was the first time it had convened outside of New York headquarters.

 

On November 25th

   1758 - The British captured Fort Duquesne (Pittsburgh) in the French and Indian Wars.

   1783 - The British evacuated New York City, their last military position, after the Revolutionary War.

   1841 - The slaves who seized the Amistad in1839 were freed by the Supreme Court. They had been defended by former president John Quincy Adams.
